VEGETATION

Vegetation

The vegetation type is coastal savannah. (The southern part is swamps and mangroves, and the northern part is savannah woodland). The savannah vegetation supports livestock, and South Tongu district is amongst the largest livestock producing districts in the country.(There are 2 million cattle in the district).Grazing has affected the land because no conscious efforts are made to develop grazing fields. A Forestation programme should be put in place to prevent desertification. Also, unfortunately, children are sometimes used in livestock rearing as a means of cheap labour.
