NATURAL RESOURCES

Natural Resources

Because of the Volta River flowing through the district, there is a fishing industry and some irrigation of the land.Other natural resources in the district which could be developed include clay deposits at Lolito, Vume and Sokpoe areas; sand deposits of Dabala, Sokpoe, Agordome, Agortaga; gravel at Tadze; and salt at Gamenu.

Water pollution is an issue and is caused mostly by badly sited sanitary facilities such as septic tanks, pit latrines and trenching grounds. Agro chemicals used by farmers who farm along the banks of rivers also pollute the water, which in most cases are sources of drinking water. This problem could be better controlled through public education and enforcement of public health laws.
